Ceremony, cocktail hour, reception — every part of your wedding day has a different musical need. Here's how to get it right without the stress.
Choosing live music for your wedding is one of the most meaningful decisions you'll make — and one of the most confusing. Do you need one band or three? A DJ or a live act? What about the ceremony?
Here's a practical breakdown by moment.
The ceremony
The ceremony is the most emotionally loaded part of the day, so the music has to be exactly right. A string quartet or acoustic duo gives you elegance and flexibility. They can hold a note during the processional, play something unexpected during the signing, and end on a high when you walk back down the aisle.
**What to look for:** Repertoire flexibility (can they play your specific song?), experience with outdoor acoustics, and someone who has done this enough to stay composed when the officiant runs ten minutes over.
The cocktail hour
This is where the day breathes. Guests are mingling, photos are happening, and the music is background — but important background. A jazz trio or bossa nova duo is perfect here: cultured, not intrusive, alive enough that guests notice it without realising why the room feels good.
**What to avoid:** The band that just played the ceremony playing the cocktail hour too, exhausted and unprepared.
The reception and dancefloor
This is the moment everyone will remember. A full party band for weddings — typically five to nine musicians with a lead vocalist — can move through dinner sets into dancefloor anthems with a crowd-reading skill no playlist will ever have. They respond to the room. They see who's getting up to dance and lean in.
**Key questions:** How many sets do they play? What's their setlist range? Have they played rooms your size?
Working with one agency
The cleanest solution is booking ceremony, cocktail and reception through one agency. Brief once, coordinate once, and have a single point of contact when the ceremony runs late and the catering timeline shifts.
At Lupa Entertainment, that's how every wedding works. One coordinator. Every musical moment of your day, handled.
