How to choose entertainment for an awards night in Amsterdam: what plays at the reception, dinner, ceremony and after party, what makes it feel upscale, and real prices.
How do you choose entertainment for an awards night?
Choose entertainment for an awards night by planning around the ceremony, not the party. An awards evening has three jobs: a reception that feels like an occasion, a seated dinner and ceremony where the music must stop on cue, and an after party for the winners. Most evenings we book in Amsterdam need a jazz trio for the reception and dinner, a short walk-up sting for each award, and a band or DJ once the last trophy is handed out.
The mistake is booking one act for all of it. A party band is too loud for the dinner and wasted during the ceremony. A lounge DJ alone makes the room feel like a hotel bar. Split the evening into moments and the budget goes further.
I am Noam Bargil, founder of Lupa Entertainment and bandleader of Benga Band. We book music for corporate evenings in Amsterdam and across the Netherlands for clients including Microsoft, Salesforce, ING and Booking.com. Dupa Trio played the Microsoft gala at the Rijksmuseum, and we have worked rooms such as the Beurs van Berlage, Hotel Okura Amsterdam and the Conservatorium Hotel. The formats are on our awards night entertainment page.
What does the music need to do at each moment of an awards night?
Each moment has one job, and the act should match it. This is the running order we plan most often.
| Moment | What the music does | Best fit | Lupa from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival and reception | Sets the tone as guests walk in | Jazz trio or vocal trio | €1,600 |
| Dinner | Sits under conversation, stops for speeches | Same jazz trio, softer | Included in the trio booking |
| Ceremony | Walk-up music and stings for each winner | Band, or DJ with a cue list | Quoted with the evening act |
| After party | Turns the room into a dance floor | Party band or DJ with live sax | €3,000 band, €1,600 Golden Sax |
For the reception and dinner we often route Dupa Trio (trumpet, guitar, bass and vocals), Fourtunes (piano, vocals and bass) or Misstery Trio for three-part vocal harmony. All three can play at conversation level for two hours and stop on a nod from the host.
How do you handle the ceremony itself?
Treat the ceremony as a cue sheet, not a set. Every award needs a short piece of walk-up music, ten to twenty seconds, that starts when the name is read and stops when the winner reaches the microphone. Twelve categories means twelve clean starts and twelve clean stops.
Send the act the running order and the category list two weeks ahead. A live band can play a signature fanfare and vary it per category; a DJ needs the list loaded and a person on the stage manager's headset. The ceremony is where a cheap booking shows: a late cue in front of 400 guests is the moment people remember.
What makes an awards ceremony feel upscale?
An awards night feels upscale when nothing is loud before it should be. Planners often ask us for a "private members club feel". In practice that means three things:
- Acoustic warmth at arrival. A trio with an upright bass and a horn sounds expensive in a way a speaker never does. Keep it under conversation volume.
- Restraint during dinner. Softer arrangements, no drum kit, and silence the moment the host walks on.
- A clear switch to the party. Lights change, the band starts with something everyone knows, and the dance floor opens on purpose, not by accident.
Velvet Jazz is the act we suggest when the brief is "classic, a little glamorous". They play modern hits in a 1940s jazz and swing style, which keeps the club feel and still gets a younger crowd singing along.
Should you book a band or a DJ for the after party?
Book a band if you want the night to have a peak, and a DJ if you need a long, flexible end. Benga Band or the 8-piece Your Band give winners a stage moment and a full floor. Golden Sax, a DJ with live saxophone, works when the room is smaller or the budget is tighter. Savoy, a DJ moving from soul and swing into modern pop, suits a crowd with three generations of staff.
For a direct comparison of the two options, see our gala band Amsterdam page and the guide to choosing gala dinner music.
How much does awards night entertainment cost?
At Lupa a jazz trio starts from €1,600, a four-piece band from €3,000, Benga Band from €3,500 for five musicians, Your Band from €5,000, a DJ from €1,000 for three hours and Golden Sax from €1,600. Sound and light from €850 extra. A typical awards evening with a trio for reception and dinner plus a band for the party lands between €4,600 and €8,000 before production.
Indicative market ranges for the Netherlands and Belgium; Lupa quotes every event individually:

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose entertainment for an awards night?
Plan around the moments: a jazz or vocal trio for reception and dinner, cued walk-up music for the ceremony, and a band or DJ for the after party. One act rarely does all three well.
How much does entertainment for an awards ceremony cost in the Netherlands?
At Lupa a jazz trio starts from €1,600, a four-piece band from €3,000 and a DJ from €1,000. Sound and light from €850 extra. Most awards evenings with a trio and a band land between €4,600 and €8,000.
What music should play when award winners walk up?
A short walk-up sting of ten to twenty seconds that starts when the name is read and stops at the microphone. A live band can vary one fanfare per category; a DJ works from a loaded cue list.
Can I hire a jazz band for an awards dinner in Amsterdam?
Yes. A jazz trio is the format we book most for awards dinners. It plays at conversation level, stops cleanly for speeches and needs about three by two metres of space.
What is the best entertainment for an upscale awards night?
A trio with acoustic instruments for the first half and a clear switch to a band for the party. Velvet Jazz suits a classic, glamorous brief.
Should I book a band or a DJ for an awards after party?
A band gives the night a peak and a stage moment for winners. A DJ covers a longer, flexible end. A DJ with live saxophone sits between the two on budget and energy.
How far in advance should I book awards night entertainment?
Eight to twelve weeks for September to December, when the Amsterdam corporate calendar is full. Four to six weeks is often enough from January to June.
Can one act cover the whole awards evening?
It can, but it is rarely the best choice. A band that plays dinner, ceremony and party needs two line ups in one booking. Splitting a trio and a party act is usually better value.
