Elegant string sound for your ceremony, booked honestly: soloist, jazz trio, or a string quartet on request.
String quartet wedding music sells one specific feeling: a calm, classical string sound during the ceremony, the moment everyone turns to watch. This page is an honest guide to what a string quartet actually does on a wedding day, what it costs, and how Lupa Entertainment books that sound. We are a boutique music agency in Amsterdam, founded in 2018 by Noam Bargil, a working bandleader. We do not keep one fixed four-piece classical quartet sitting on a shelf, which means you get a straight answer instead of a sales pitch. We book the right live ensemble for each moment: a soloist for the processional, our Dupa Trio for a warm jazz-and-strings feel across the ceremony, drinks and dinner, or Velvet Jazz for vintage glamour. A true classical string quartet we arrange on request through our network. And we will tell you upfront when a soloist or a trio carries the same moment for less money. Over 300 events since 2018 for clients including Heineken, Microsoft, Booking.com and ING stand behind that advice.
How it works
What a string quartet actually does at a wedding
A string quartet plays one moment beautifully: the ceremony. Four string players carry the processional, the vows and the recessional with a sound that reads formal and warm without ever being loud. What a string quartet does not do is fill a dance floor or power a long dinner with energy. This is where couples go wrong most often, booking a quartet for the whole day and discovering at the party that four strings cannot lift a late room. The smart move is to give each part of the day the right format rather than stretching one act across twelve hours.
Matching the format to the moment
| Moment | Best format | From |
|---|---|---|
| Processional and ceremony | Soloist or string ensemble | EUR 600 |
| Drinks reception | Acoustic duo or jazz trio | EUR 1,000 |
| Seated dinner | Jazz trio (Dupa Trio) | EUR 1,400 |
| Evening party | Four-piece band, sound and light included | EUR 3,000 |
| Late dance floor | DJ | EUR 850 |
How Lupa books the string sound honestly
We do not keep a fixed classical quartet in house, and we will not pretend otherwise. If you want that elegant string sound, we have three honest routes. First, a soloist for the ceremony, a violin or a saxophone for the processional, from EUR 600. Second, our Dupa Trio, a jazz trio with trumpet, guitar, bass and vocals that carries a warm acoustic sound across the ceremony, reception and dinner, from EUR 1,400, a format that covers more of the day than a quartet playing the ceremony alone. Third, Velvet Jazz, a vintage band that turns modern songs into 1940s string and swing arrangements, for couples who want glamour over strict classical. A true classical string quartet we arrange on request through our network of vetted players. We do not send an act we have not seen play.
String quartet wedding cost
A dedicated classical string quartet typically runs an indicative market rate of EUR 600 to EUR 1,200 for the ceremony, a market figure rather than a Lupa price. Our own fixed options are transparent: a ceremony soloist from EUR 600, an acoustic duo for the reception from EUR 1,000, the Dupa Trio across ceremony, reception and dinner from EUR 1,400, a four-piece band for the party from EUR 3,000 with sound and light included, each extra musician at EUR 500, and a DJ for the late floor from EUR 850. Travel outside Amsterdam is quoted as a separate itemised line. Most weddings combine two formats, for example a string soloist for the ceremony and a band or DJ for the evening. For the full cost picture see our guide string quartet ceremony, what it costs.
Strings for the ceremony itself
For the ceremony, volume and mood matter more than headcount. A soloist or a small string ensemble fills a church, a garden or a historic hall warmly without drowning the guests. We plan three moments with you in advance: the processional, a quiet moment during the ritual, and the recessional, which usually wants to be brighter and more joyful. In Amsterdam we play regularly in rooms like De Duif, the Hortus Botanicus, the Pulitzer and Hotel de l'Europe, all places where an acoustic string or jazz sound works well. For the reception afterwards the same booking moves cleanly from trio to band or DJ.
Common mistakes booking string music for a wedding
- Booking a quartet for the whole day. Four strings will not carry a dance floor, you need a band or a DJ for that.
- Underestimating volume outdoors. Outside, even a string ensemble needs light amplification or the sound disappears.
- Booking late. The best players are filled months ahead across the May to September wedding season.
- Buying on price alone. A soloist from EUR 600 often makes the ceremony just as lovely as a pricier quartet.
- Forgetting the later moments. Plan the reception, dinner and party in the same booking and it all fits together from one source. See more options at wedding band Netherlands and jazz band Netherlands.
